The inaugural Methven Mud and Steel was held on Saturday October 12th and Sunday 13th 2019 at Carneys Road, Alford Forest. It was a weekend of 4WD Winch Challenges, part of the NZ1 competition. This is a rapidly growing sport where competitors tackle impossible slopes, bottomless mud holes and all against the clock.
Methven Mud and Steel kicked off with some of New Zealand’s toughest custom-built race trucks, attempting to race on 20, purpose-built tracks, which are set up so that, just to finish, is to win.
The repaired trucks, and battered teams, swap to the other half of the courses, which have now been chewed up to become either vertical walls of destruction, or men and machine swallowing pits of doom for the teams. All the while however, the clock keeps ticking down to stage disqualification time.
