Funds from 4WD trip benefit local groups
/0 Comments/in news /by adminOn Sunday 28th of February around 370 vehicles took advantage of beautiful weather and accessed private farm tracks in the upper Rakaia Gorge area in a 4wd safari organised by the Methven Lions Club. Project organiser Gary Rackham was very pleased with the public support for this event and said the day ran very smoothly thanks to the efforts of many volunteers.
It was a special opportunity to see some wonderful Mid Canterbury high country, an area that most people don’t have the chance to visit. The excursion travelled through Glenfalloch and Lake Heron Stations, access was kindly made available by the Todhunter families. Amazing views of the upper Rakaia River, Lake Stream and Mid Canterbury back country were seen from the farm tracks.
The funds raised are used by Methven Lions to support local charitable needs, with donations already made to three local groups. Methven Search and Rescue has received $3000 to help fund new jackets, the Alford Forest Rural Fire Unit received $2000 for defibrillator equipment and the Upper Rakaia Gorge Rural Fire Unit $1000 for Medical Packs.
Methven Lions President Graham Campion today presented cheques to Graham Smith of the Alford Forest Fire Unit, Lew Shaw of Methven Search and Rescue, and Willy Ensor of the Upper Rakaia Gorge Rural Fire Unit.

High Country 4WD trip
/0 Comments/in news /by adminSunday the 28th of Feb was a brilliant day for the planned 4wd trip through the upper Rakaia Gorge, Glenfalloch Station and Lake Heron Station. There was an excellent turnout, with a panic printing of a few extra maps needed. People were able to see some beautiful back country, not far physically from the plains but a world apart in other ways. The barbecue and coffee stands at Glenfalloch were kept very busy, thank you everyone for your support.
This trip is not an annual event, but hopefully will be running again in 2 or 3 years.

Lions website !
/0 Comments/in news /by adminMethven Lions have functioned well since 1967 using the community grapevine and phone for communication. Many of the projects undertaken today have interest well outside Methven. Recently we opened a Facebook page to help spread information, this website is the next step. As content from ongoing events is added the aim is to give the wider community a better idea of Lions activities and also any information relevant to what Lions can offer to assist other community groups.
Information about upcoming projects will be in the Events pages, starting with the High Country 4 wheel drive trip in February.
